Stony-iron meteorites - also called pallasites - are especially fascinating. Olivine crystals embedded into a metal matrix represent the boundaries between the cores of planetesimals or protoplanets and their silicate mantles. If cut into thin slices the transparency of the crystals can be admired with colours ranging from bright yellow to green. The olivine crystals can be of gem quality and are sometimes used in jewellery where the crystals are cut and faceted.
