Iron meteorites are the former cores of bigger asteroids or protoplanets (planetary embryos that didn't grow big enough to become planets in their own right). In the very early phase of our solar system the heavy elements sunk down towards the centres of these bodies when they were still molten. The same process happened on Earth too; the centre of the Earth consists of an iron-nickel core. We will never be able to hold a piece of Earth's core in our hands, but we can now explore the metal cores of protoplanets and asteroids.
