Banded Iron Formation (BIF) is a layered sedimentary rock formed billions of years ago in Earth’s early oceans. It records the first oxygen produced by ancient photosynthetic algae (cyanobacteria). This oxygen reacted with dissolved iron, creating alternating iron-rich and silica-rich bands. BIFs are among the earliest evidence of oxygenation on Earth. Front side polished to a glossy finish, reverse side not polished.
